It's not easy to seek help for your child. I've been there. I've been a psychologist for 29 years, but I've been a parent for 25--and counting.
I began my career working with children struggling with aggression, depression, grief, anxiety, and other symptoms related to trauma. In my current practice, I work with young children ages 2-11 facing similar issues, along with their parents. I also work with adults transitioning to parenthood through adoption or childbirth.
I use a range of treatment modalities from synergetic play therapy (in which I'm certified) to parent/child work to family systems therapy to psychodynamic relational therapy. I'm fascinated by the ways our bodies both keep track of past struggles, but can also lead the way to living healthier and more authentic lives.
I took an extended child-raising sabbatical with my three kids during which time I was humbled daily by the challenges of parenthood. Over these years I learned more than I ever expected. During this time, I read a ton of books on parenting and various other interests, and incorporated my learning into a parenting blog called "Play. Fight. Repeat." Check it out at: www.playfightrepeat.com.
As my kids got older and were less comfortable with my writing about their adolescent lives, I looked back at which topics had been most popular on my blog and turned these into a book, "Sweet Spots: Helping Your Kids Find ENOUGH in Their Lives."
"Cochran's timely and informative book comes from her professional and personal experiences. Her kind and wise reflections offer modern parents both practical help and long-term perspective as they navigate the challenging work and joy of raising children. I heartily recommend it."
